Gold Beach Tour
Gold Beach. The 231 brigade landed on the western sector Jig , while the 69th Brigade landed on the western sector King. Here how the battled to defeat the German defences around Ver sur Mer and Asnelles then pushed inland. Gold although suffering many problems was probabily D-Day’s overall most successful landing taking D-day objectives by 7th June
Mont Fleury Gun Battery. Overlooking the eastern end of Gold beach. It was here and at Crepon that the actions of CSM Stan Hollis , 6th Green Howards ,resulted in him being awarded the Victoria Cross
Port en Bessin. A fishing harbour west of the landings, 47 Royal Marine Commando traveled 12 miles on D-day after a disastrous landing. Attacked the port on the 7th and captured the defences on the 8th June after desperate battles with the defender. The Pluto line was docked at Port en Bessin to supply fuel. Late on the 8th June a link up was formed with the American 1st Infantry division.

Longues sur Mer Battery , WN48. Built in early 1944 , the guns had the range to fire upon both Gold and Omaha sectors. It was the first german gun battery to open fire on D-day. One can visit the casements with guns in place and hear how it was captured on the 7th June by the 2nd Devon’s.
Arromanches. Small fishing harbour west of the amphibious landings. Liberated by the 7th June The British anchored their Mulberry Harbour here, One can still see remains of the harbour today
St Pierre/ Tilly sur Seulles. Have secured their D-day objectives the 8th Armoured Brigade with attached units pushed inland . Here how the battled against elements of the 12SS Panzers Division and the Panzer Lehr Division . Tilly sur Seulles changed sides more times than any village in Normandy.
Bayeux Cemetery. Largest of the British Cemeteries on Normandy. 4648 Graves. A beautiful cemetery . A truly humbling experience to walk amongst the graves reading what the loved one said as a final tribute. Will bring tears to your eyes.
