Full Day V Corps, Omaha & Pointe du Hoc

About This Tour

Of all the D-Day landing beaches, Omaha is the one whose name has become synonymous with courage under fire. The V Corps assault on Omaha Beach on June 6, 1944 was the most costly and most dramatic of the landings, and it came within hours of catastrophic failure. This full-day tour explores every aspect of the Omaha assault: the draws where men fought their way off the beach, the WN62 and WN72 strongpoints, the American Cemetery that looks out over the scene, and the towering cliffs of Pointe du Hoc where US Rangers climbed under fire to silence a battery that threatened both beaches.

Detailed Itinerary

Of all the D-Day beaches, Omaha is synonymous with courage under fire, this full-day tour explores every aspect of the V Corps assault, from the draws where men fought their way off the beach to the towering cliffs of Pointe du Hoc.

Vierville-sur-Mer Draw (WN72)

The westernmost exit from Omaha Beach, the D-1 draw at Vierville was assaulted by Company A of the 116th Infantry Regiment at catastrophic cost. The German position WN72 commanded a field of fire over the entire draw approach, standing here you understand immediately why the assault nearly failed.

Omaha Beach

An extended guided walk covering Easy Red, Dog Green, and the assault routes up the bluffs. Your guide brings to life the tactical decisions made under fire by small groups of soldiers who refused to die on the sand, men like Colonel George Taylor, who told his troops that only two kinds of people were staying on the beach: the dead and those who were going to die.

WN62 Strongpoint

The most intact German defensive position on Omaha Beach, WN62 commanded the most heavily used sector of the beach. Walking through the concrete emplacements, you see the battlefield from the defenders' perspective, the panoramic view over the sand that made Omaha such a killing ground.

Normandy American Cemetery

On the bluffs above the beach where they fell, 9,387 American servicemen and women lie in perfectly tended rows. A guided walk includes individual stories of those buried here, men from every state, every background, united by a single morning on a Norman beach.

Pointe du Hoc

The 2nd Ranger Battalion scaled these 30-metre cliffs under fire to silence a battery that threatened both beaches. The preserved crater field and casemates are among the most atmospheric battlefield sites in all of Normandy.
