Gold Beach

About This Tour

Gold Beach was the central British landing of June 6th, assaulted by the experienced British 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division. Their objectives included the port of Arromanches, where engineers would construct an artificial Mulberry Harbour, one of the engineering miracles of the war, to supply the Allied armies. This tour visits the beach itself, the extraordinary remains of the Mulberry Harbour that still sit offshore, the menacing coastal artillery battery at Longues-sur-Mer, and the British Military Cemetery at Bayeux.

Detailed Itinerary

Gold Beach was the central British landing of June 6th, where the 50th Division stormed ashore before engineers began constructing one of the war's great engineering achievements, the Mulberry B Harbour at Arromanches.

Gold Beach, Ver-sur-Mer

The King Green and King Red sectors where the 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division landed on the morning of June 6. A guided walk on the beach covers the assault, the obstacles, and the flanking operations that took the defenders from the rear.

Arromanches and the Mulberry Harbour

The extraordinary concrete caissons still visible offshore at Arromanches are the remains of Mulberry B, the prefabricated harbour towed across the Channel in pieces and assembled offshore to supply the Allied armies. Your guide explains how it worked, why it was built, and what it meant to the campaign.

Longues-sur-Mer Battery

The coastal artillery battery at Longues-sur-Mer was engaged on D-Day by HMS Ajax and Argonaut before Allied troops arrived. Today the battery's original gun barrels remain in their concrete casemates, the only D-Day coastal battery where the guns are still in place.

Bayeux War Cemetery

The largest Commonwealth War Graves cemetery in Normandy, with over 4,000 burials. Many of those interred here fell in the fighting around Gold Beach and the subsequent advance inland, a moving and reflective end to the day.
