American Highlights Tour

About This Tour

The American Highlights Tour is the perfect introduction to the American D-Day sector. In one carefully curated day, we visit the most iconic sites, Sainte-Mère-Église, Utah Beach, Omaha Beach, the WN62 German strongpoint, and the Normandy American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer. Your guide brings each location to life, explaining the tactical decisions, the extraordinary courage, and the terrible cost of June 6, 1944. This tour works beautifully as both a first visit and as a focused overview for those who have been before.

Detailed Itinerary

This full day American D-Day tour traces the story of the U.S. airborne and infantry landings from inland Sainte-Mère-Église through the causeways of Utah Beach, to the hard-fought sands of Omaha Beach, ending at the Normandy American Cemetery overlooking the coast.

Sainte-Mère-Église

One of the first towns liberated on D-Day, captured by paratroopers of the 505th Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. A strategic crossroads town inland from the Utah Beach landings, Sainte-Mère-Église saw heavy fighting throughout the first days of the invasion. Hear the stories of the scattered mis-drops, the town's capture, and its desperate defence. Visit the famous church, with its stained glass window honouring the town's liberators, along with the D-Day and Airborne monuments in the square below.

Hedgerow Country

Leaving Sainte-Mère-Église, the tour continues through Normandy's dense hedgerow countryside toward the Utah Beach causeways. Learn how this landscape, known to soldiers as the bocage, shaped the entire campaign: the problems it caused for both Allied and German forces, how the Germans used it to defend, and how American troops ultimately solved the tactical puzzle it posed.

Utah Beach

The first of the American landings, Utah Beach saw the 4th Infantry Division and its supporting units come ashore in what became one of D-Day's most successful operations, a powerful example of officers and men adapting under the chaos of battle. The tour first visits the sector where the division was originally meant to land, touring the German defensive position Stp 10, before moving to the actual landing site. Monuments here honour the 4th Infantry Division, American engineers, the US Navy, and the 90th Infantry Division.

Omaha Beach, Dog Green Sector

Omaha Beach suffered D-Day's heaviest casualties, as the 29th Infantry Division and 1st Infantry Division stormed ashore against ferocious resistance. Standing at Dog Green sector gives you a true sense of the ground these soldiers had to cross, and why it cost so much. The battle for the beach raged for hours, with survivors later describing bullets falling like rain. The tour then visits WN62, one of the key German defensive positions in the 1st Infantry Division's sector, offering a rare view of the battlefield from the defenders' side.

Normandy American Cemetery

Overlooking Omaha Beach, this is a truly humbling place to end the tour. Walk among the graves of 9,387 American servicemen and women who gave their lives during the Normandy campaign, laid out across 172 beautifully maintained acres. The perfect, reflective close to a full day tracing the American story of D-Day.
