Villers-Bocage
About This Tour
On June 13, 1944, just one week after D-Day, SS Hauptsturmführer Michael Wittmann and a handful of Tiger tanks ambushed the lead elements of the British 7th Armoured Division in the town of Villers-Bocage, destroying over two dozen vehicles in minutes and halting one of the most experienced armoured formations in the British Army. The engagement became one of the most analysed tank actions of the war, and its consequences shaped the British operational posture for weeks. This bespoke tour explores the town, Wittmann's attack route, Point 213 where the ambush began, and the wider context of the British armoured operations around it.
Detailed Itinerary
One of the most dramatic tank engagements of the war, Michael Wittmann's Tiger attack on June 13, 1944, which halted an entire British armoured column in the streets of Villers-Bocage.
Villers-Bocage Town Centre
The main street where Wittmann's Tiger destroyed A Squadron, 4th County of London Yeomanry in a matter of minutes, driving along the street, firing left and right, destroying tank after tank before the British crews could respond.
Wittmann's Start Position
The treeline on the Caen road from which Wittmann observed the British column before attacking, and from which his flanking movement brought him into the town behind the lead elements.
Point 213
The high ground outside town where the regimental commanding officer was killed and B Squadron was ambushed, the position that Wittmann's initial attack was designed to cut off from the town.
The Town Square
Where Sergeant Bobby Bramall's Cromwell finally stopped Wittmann's Tiger, one of the dramatic reversals of the entire engagement, ending the German's seemingly unstoppable rampage through the column.
7th Armoured Division Approach
The Desert Rats' advance from the Caumont gap that created the opportunity Wittmann destroyed, and the wider British operational posture that made the 7th Armoured's exposed flank possible.
